Why You Shouldn’t Buy Tramadol Online For A Pregnant Woman or A Nursing Mother
June 7, 2010
Tramadol
is an opioid analgesic capable of providing relief for moderate to severe pain. However, being an opioid it has an addictive potential and its use is regulated by the FDA. In most states, you require a prescription before tramadol can be sold to you.
However, quite a number of online pharmacies offer to sell cheap tramadol without prescriptions. While you can go ahead and buy cheap tramadol, it is unwise to give tramadol (Ultram) to a pregnant woman and a nursing mother without a doctor’s approval.
The FDA puts tramadol in Class C
for use during pregnancy. This means that administering the drugs to animals during studies shows clear danger and so its use in pregnant humans is discouraged even though there are no safety studies in humans. Such extrapolations of drug behavior from animal studies to humans are common, encouraged and taken as evidence especially if it is a harmful effect rather than benefit. Such erring on the side of caution has probably saved more lives than you can count.
While there has been no human study of tramadol use in pregnancy there have been cases of its actual use during pregnancy and labor which resulted in serious side-effects for the newborn. This is also the reason behind discouraging its use for nursing mother because the drug passes into breast milk even though this amount is low.
In both cases but especially for nursing mothers, tramadol’s use is permitted only when absolutely necessary, in the absence of alternatives, after the risks have been weighed by a medical professional and the benefits thought to outweigh the risks.
So next time you buy tramadol online make sure not to take it if you are pregnant or nursing a baby. Instead see a doctor for an alternative and advice.
